So, it turns out that I’m really good at sleeping on planes. Sam isn’t. I quickly got onto our new Europe schedule, but Sam could never fall asleep, even with a sleeping pill. But, after about 18 hours of tavel time, we finally arived in Stockholm.
Now, we had arranged to stay with a guy named Eric through the wonderful app called CouchSurfing. Basically it’s a bunch of world travelers who open their homes up to other travelers in their city on a “what goes around comes around” principle. Anyway, we landed at about 2:30, and Eric didn’t get off work until 5. So we decided to try getting our first meal in Stockholm.
So we go to the ATM to get some cash. After debating how much money we should take out (we didn’t want to end up with too much when we head off for Copenhagen where the cuency is different) I put in my debit card and entered my PIN, and selected the ammount.
REQUEST DENIED. INAVLID PIN NUMBER.
Oh. Heck. No.
This happened 3 times. I then tried my credit card. Same thing. So then I call Bank of America (and spend like $5 on the international calls) only to have them tell me that they can’t do anything except send a PIN reminder through snail mail to my home address. That probably wont get there til Wednesday. Awesome. Luckly I brought a very small ammount of US dollars, so I went to a currency exchange, got totally ripped off with a flat transaction fee, and got some Swedish Krona.
Afte that Sam and I were so hungry we didn’t really care what we ate, as long as it wasn’t McDonalds or BurgerKing (which were the first 2 places we saw in the train station). We ended up finding a delicious little fast food chain called MAX where we split a meal to save on cash.
We then went back to the train station and waited for Eric, who found us not too long later.
He is a very nice and fun guy who has done some amazing traveling! We had to buy a rather expensive train ticket to get to his place about 10 minutes from the city center, and then had to walk about 20 minutes to get to his apartment, while wearing our backpacks and practically falling over because we were both SO tired by this point. So we got to his place, where he had his couch and a matress all set up for us :) such a nice guy.
Afte taking a quick power nap, Sam and I decided to walk around the area a bit. We found a grocery store, bought some sandwich stuff, and ate dinner back at his place. It was very strange thinking that we were just walking around in Stockholm. NBD. Oh, and buying food was fun because it was all in Sweedish so we basically just had to guess at everything. It turned out to be a very fun evening, even though we didn’t do any of the real “touristy” sight seeing stuff yet. That’ll be for tomorrow!
